Continuing our ‘Get to Know Us’ Friday blog series, we have been speaking to some of our newest business partners about their work and why right now is the perfect time to invest in employee volunteering.
Next up is Andrew Weir, Managing Director of Greenwood Moreland.
Why did you decide to join Social Good Connect?
Helping where we can with selected charities has always been part of the DNA of Greenwood Moreland. Many of our own clients are charities, so we’ve become familiar with a lot of their causes, activities and challenges. Social Good Connect were introduced to us by a mutual friend (who is also working closely with charities in Scotland) and an initial conversation with Caroline was set up on the back of that.
This happened at a time when we were looking to update our approach to volunteering and interactions with charity work generally within the firm. Signing up to the platform is an ideal chance to bring our whole team on board to think about how they can use their skills to help the local community in a more targeted and ultimately more beneficial way.
Why have you decided that now is a good time for you to join?
2020 has been a uniquely busy year as we’ve tried to manage the impact of the pandemic as best we can; looking after our clients while working from home and often juggling new domestic and family commitments at the same time.
So in theory we should have less time for volunteering – but perhaps now more than any other time in recent history we feel that those who can help out others, should.
What do you particularly like about the platform and the way it works?
What appeals to us is the bespoke opportunities Social Good Connect identifies for people to volunteer beyond the classic ‘painting a wall’ days out. The matching service means you can effectively dig into people’s CVs and call on their often very varied experience and interests.
We felt that this platform is novel and different in that it aims higher and creates specific skills-and interest-based matches. It gives the individuals in our team a way to contribute to causes they care about in a more meaningful and impactful way.
What would success with employee volunteering look like for you?
I’d like to see as many of our employees as possible engaged in volunteering, whether it’s alone or as part of a team project. I hope they’re inspired by our relationship with Social Good Connect to form links with charities they’ve never heard of before and even continue volunteering in their own time if it suits them.
Longer-term, I hope that useful volunteering becomes embedded in our company culture.
What would you say to other businesses thinking of signing up?
Most businesses we deal with are generous and want to do the right thing. The instinct is to give back, and many do, but possibly in an ad hoc way that might vary year on year. Many stop short of formalising their approach as we have until now. I think it’s worth businesses revisiting what they’re trying to achieve and then tailor their charity and volunteering work to match that.
Forming a relationship with Social Good Connect means potentially a longer-term, more organised strategy for giving back to the community. It’s a great tool for businesses thinking of doing more to help, and I haven’t seen anything similar with this level of scale and ambition where the matches aim to be so bespoke.
It feels like a great thing to be part of, it’s a good cultural fit for us and it will help us become the kind of firm we want to be.
